The 12 Days of Healing

Day 1 – A Partridge in a Pear Tree.  Our own beautiful pear christmas tree complete with David Cassidy of “Partridge Family” fame starring atop it all. SO funny!

The Rockstar Kayla is out of ICU and resting very comfortably in Unit3.  In typical fashion, she set goals for herself and achieved them with flying colors.  Sushi this afternoon was her dietary reward for passing all the ICU benchmarks :-).  The docs are so happy with her progress that there is even a possibility that she may get out tomorrow….Day 3 wow…what an amazing young woman.

It has been my experience that it takes a village to journey thru cancer and let me tell you, we have the BEST VILLAGE EVER!  There have been some pretty dark moments over the past couple months & yet we are continually surrounded by such love, support and acts of kindness that I truly feel carried at times.  And I know Kayla & Tyler feel the same way.

It is impossible for me to single out individuals to thank, for there are far too many loving souls surrounding us every single day, doing such beautiful & thoughtful things to ease our journey. We even received flowers today from a complete stranger who joins us in love & support.  It is all truly heartwarming and please know how much every act, message & prayer means to us.

One example is the 12 Days of Christmas surprises….it is SO fun to receive these treasures.  Whoever the angel(s) are behind this venture clearly have a great sense of humor to go along with a big heart.  It really gives us something to look forward to every day.  I was literally dancing around the hospital room tonite when our huge “Three French Hen” basket arrived stocked full of French wonders including:

  • French bread, wine & cheese
  • 3 lovely berets (one each for me, K & T)
  • a full range of French entertainment including a movie (Chocolate), music (Celine Dion), a magazine (Vogue, in Francais) and a novel “Paris, My Sweet”
  • 3 HUGE gingerbread hens each with their own giant Kinder eggs (not sure if the eggs truly qualify as French – we considered that as the multi-cultural fusion component :)
  • The anonymous handmade card had the most incredible quote by French philosopher  Albert Camus, “In the depth of winter I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer”.  I love that!

This amazing act of love is helping us to have 12 Days of Healing….our road may be dark at times, however all of our angels are truly shining Christmas light and joy on our little family.  Thank you one and all.

With our one day at a time approach – today was a good day.  We will sleep well tonite, with visions of 4 calling birds dancing in our heads.  Carpe Diem!

  5. Shannon,
There come moments when words are inadequate to a situation, or to one’s response to a situation. I find myself in that state as I contemplate and marvel at yours and Kayla’s courage in the face of peril, serenity in the face of sorrow, honesty when denial would be such an obvious escape. I wish you both continued strength and pray, too, that the many blessings you have been granted stay with you: the blessings of love, friendship and connection to spirit.

  6. Oh I love this! “In the depth of winter I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer”. Such a reminder of the warm beauty and glistening sun of strength that resides in us all.

I’m thrilled to hear that it was a good day for you and Kayla. Sending you many more of those… one day at a time.

    Hugs and continued prayers,

  10. Barb Myers says:

Angels are surrounded by angels Shannon. It’s no wonder that you have a whole village of them who are there for you and Kayla. Your kids are so lucky to have such an incredibly strong role model. Your positive energy in these very dark days is incredible and for Kayla to have that at such a young age is amazing. You both are so deserving of the positive outcomes that everyone wishes for you. You and Kayla are each truly an inspiration, even to those of us who haven’t had the pleasure of meeting you yet. I know that our Butterfly of Hope team mates would want me to wish you both well and send you butterfly hugs, kisses and best wishes. We will continue to pray for all of you and to send positive vibes your way.

  11. I am still giggling at David Cassidy in the tree but wanted to send along a healing prayer for the beautiful and brave Miss Kayla:
May God heal your body and soul.
    May your pain cease,
    May your strength increase,
    May your fears be released,
May blessings, love, and joy surround you.
