A new chapter unfolds….

This is the original email I sent out letting friends know about cancer’s return…

Re: Another speed bump on my journey

Dear friends,
On Sept 11, I always take time for reflection … this year was 12 years from the date I was first told I had cancer. The irony of this year’s anniversary was I was in getting a CT scan to determine what was happening in my body.

To bring everyone up to speed, I was in a car accident last April and shortly after started experiencing some back/rib pain. They did x-rays and stated everything was fine and that it would just take time.
My beautiful lakeside sanctuary is the perfect place to heal and I had a truly magical summer sharing it with my loved ones – the one downside being that the pain was not getting better, in fact getting worse.

Upon returning home after Labour Day, I called my oncologist to do some further checking and it has been a whirlwind of tests since. Yesterday I received the results and it’s sad news.
The cancer has returned….the bone metastasis is in my ribs, spine and skull. There are also spots in both lungs. Obviously not good news.

I have experienced a myriad of emotions over the past 24 hours – shock, sadness, fear, anger – and also gratitude, faith & peace.
I am so very grateful for the outpouring of love and support that surrounds me and my children at every turn. And even in this short time, miracles arise. A dear friend has arranged for me to meet with a world-class holistic oncologist in NYC next week (appt Fri 21). It means everything to be given this level of expertise to assess my case and to help me formulate a full holistic treatment plan. I will keep you up to date via email as to what unfolds.

One thing I know for sure, is that I can not walk this journey alone. Many have asked what they can do, so I’d like to propose a couple of ideas that you are free to take or leave.
1) Virtual Prayer Circle – Please send prayers to me and my two beautiful children (Kayla 15 & Tyler 12)….they are the light of my life and this is really tough news to have to share with your kids. Twelve years ago, friends got together before every major event – surgeries, chemo etc – to bring prayers of peace, healing and wisdom. It helped so much.

2) Practical Support – I have already had so many offers for help and I am so very grateful for all the support I have rec’d to date with food, driving, picking up children, appts, flowers, notes, emails, gifts etc. THANK YOU! I know that over the next months much practical assistance will be needed. My dear friend, Cindy Winther, has offered coordinate this on my behalf so pls drop me a note if you’d like to contribute in some way and I’ll add you to the list. She’ll contact people as the needs arise.

I will be updating everyone via email….I’m sorry if it feels impersonal but it’s just not practical to contact everyone individually. If you’d like to be removed from this group, pls let me know and I won’t be offended in the least. I am so very grateful for all of your messages sent via cards, emails, texts etc – please keep sending them to me. Receiving all your love & encouragement is so powerful – it’s like a virtual hug :)

I write this email from a place of peace and hope. 12 years ago I was in a similar situation …. and I overcame the odds, healed my body & soul and created a truly beautiful life for myself. I intend to do this again … only this time grounded with a toolkit of experience.
It also carries tremendous gratitude for I am surrounded by loving & supportive friends like you – I thank you for your role in my journey.

Carpe Diem!  Love, Shannon
